Pro Wrestling Review: How to save Smackdown part one

Welcome back to Pro Wrestling Review. First of all happy new year even though that was a couple weeks ago and at this time of year there are lots of resolution being made but there is one that I want wwe to make. I want them to get smackdown back on track. 2012 was definitely a bad year for wwe. It wasn't just one show being bad it was the entire company I mean we had John Laurinaitis vs John Cena in the main event of a PPV. If that isn't bad I don't know what is. It was like the entire writing staff decided to take 2012 off after Extreme Rules.

Smackdown went from being the best show in wwe with good matches and good story lines (which is kind of what TNA is now minus the Brooke Hogan thing) to a show not that much different from Wwe Superstars. After the Elimination Chamber they just stopped caring about it. They failed Sheamus's push and then in the wrestlemania build up I think Sheamus and Danial Bryon had only one face to face face off. Then wwe really showed us that they didn't care about smackdown by having the show's main event being 18 seconds long at wrestlemania and also making the royal rumble mean a lot less.

Next we had four or five matches with Alberto Del Rio and Sheamus which had absolutely no story line at all. The only interesting thing that happened in the feud was when Del Rio attacked Sheamus and slammed him into his car. Then they showed that video package for weeks after that. Every match these two had ended with a brogue kick. Now we have a world heavyweight champion better than Sheamus with the Big Show and now Del Rio but they still need good feuds. The feuds with Sheamus and Show have been better than with Del Rio but since that feud set the bar at the very bottom of the scale that's not saying much. The world heavyweight championship has gone down a lot in prestige as well.

How to fix it #1: give smackdown some originality

One of the reasons that I think that smackdown is struggling is is because of the end of the brand separation A lot of people were happy in 2011 when wwe ended the brand separation but I haven't noticed anything better since it's been gone. It used to separated the two brands and made them both original. Now smackdown is just a lame continuation of Raw. The only thing that's original to smackdown is the world heavyweight championship and I just talked about how bad that is right now.

At first when they had the raw supershow they would have matches with smackdown people like Cody Rhodes, Wade Barrett and Randy Orton. It was like a teaser of what smackdown was like. Now smackdown is just a continuation of what happened on raw. It doesn't have any feuds beside the world title feud that are mainly exclusive to smackdown. So there's no point in sitting through smackdown if you know that they'll talk about it on raw. Heck they'll probably even show a video package on raw of whatever happened on smackdown since they're trying to fill three hours.

That's another thing with raw being three hours a lot of the important things happen on raw. For instance a couple weeks ago Wade Barrett won the intercontinental championship from Kofi Kingston on raw. That should not have happened on raw if they wanted to happen on a show and not on a ppv it should have happened on smackdown since it's supposed to be a smackdown title. Smackdown really needs some wrestlers that seem like just smackdown guys. People that you mainly just see on smackdown. Now without the draft and brand separation it seems like all the superstars are in one basket and raw is the show that they're on. Smackdown just seems like a raw aftershow with only pretty much unimportant stuff happening on.

It's kind of like Tna Xplostion when was the last time you watched that. Now for those of you that don't know that's another show that Tna does and they don't advertise it enough on impact for one but it's just an aftershow of impact basically. It has nothing to make its self stand out. So you know that if you miss or don't watch that show you're not going to miss anything important story line wise. That's kind of what smackdown is becoming.

I think that if wwe doesn't do anything about this smackdown will turn into a show like Wwe Main Event. A show that is even kind of entertaining but is definitely a sideshow. Let's look at what happened last week on that show. Randy Orton was attacked by the Shield. That sounds kind of like what happened on raw doesn't it. So if I didn't watch Main Event last week would I have missed a major part of a story line no. Are there any story lines that mostly take place on that show no. Now I know that I sound like Daniel Bryon here but what I'm trying to say is there is no incentive to watch smackdown anymore. Now that's OK for Main Event because that is a sideshow, an extra thing to watch but do we really want that to happen with smackdown? Do we really that to smackdown to just become as important as wwe Main Event or Superstars?

With Raw going to three hours and the state that smackdown is in it looks like wwe could become a company with just one main show Raw and then a couple others that you can watch for something extra if your bored but they aren't very important. That's always been something that I think has kind of separated wwe from Tna a little bit. With Tna no matter how good it is it's only one main show. Although with wwe you watch it multiple times a week.

If wwe really wants to be a one show company then that puts a lot of pressure on raw to be very good and raw isn't very good right now it's just barely passing right now in my opinion. So raw would have to be extremely good because that's the only main show you'd see of wwe every week. If raw was bad then the entire company would be bad at that point. Where as before if raw wasn't very good then smackdown still probably was except for this summer that didn't work and it could have been partly because of this.

Let's look at the summer of 2009 A lot of people didn't really like what was happening on Raw. This was before DX had reunited and raw was getting repetitive with just John Cena, Randy Orton and Triple H having lots of matches together. Did that mean that wwe was terrible at that point no because smackdown was doing great with Jeff Hardy having CM Punk among other things.

Even if raw puts on a good show which would you rather see a three hour episode of raw or wwe television spread into different parts of the week on different shows. I would pick the latter. I talked about how raw being the only main show would put a pressure on it well it being three hours makes it even worse. Wwe has to then make all three hours interesting. Three hours is a very long time to watch a show. That's longer than most movies that you go to see in the theaters. If you went to see a three hour movie chances are you would probably get bored with it at some point.

So the viewers are probably already getting tired and bored with raw by the middle of the show even if it is a decent episode. They're probably more on twitter or doing something else than they are watching the show. So wwe would have to make the show not just good but good enough that it keeps you interested even in the later part of the show.

I talk about wwe's problem of building up young stars and keeping them at them at the top (and I will also an article about that coming out soon) but with one show the world heavyweight title would probably be unified again. So that would make it even more hard for them to fix that and there would be even less room in the title picture. Just think about 2012 CM Punk would be the only world champion that year with the world title.

So what I'm trying say in this article is that I think that smackdown is very important to wwe and they need to take it more seriously. I don't think that wwe having just raw as their main show is a good idea. I also think that one thing that will help smackdown is originality they need a set of superstars that you mostly only see on smackdown. Now I'm not saying that wwe has to bring back the draft and everything but if they could use having smackdown superstars on raw like they did back in 2011 when they used it as kind of teaser of smackdown. I think that would help a lot. Although I don't think that bringing the brand separation and the draft back would be that much of a bad idea.

This is just part one of this how to save smackdown article. In part two which will come out in the next couple of weeks I will talk about how to fix the smackdown main event among other things.

Pro Wrestling Review #6: 2012 Awards

Happy New Year everybody and welcome back to Pro Wrestling Review. In this edition I'm going to be giving my awards for the year of 2012.

Match of the Year: Triple H vs The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 28

I did a poll on twitter for this and with my vote included The Undertaker vs Triple at Wrestlemania 28 won. This came as no surprise to me because this was a great match. It was a step up from their 2011 match which was very good as well. I saw this match live when I bought Wrestlemania and I'm very glad that I did. It was very intense and every pin fall had me jumping out of my chair. I wish I had seen the 2011 match live too but one thing that we had in 2012 was Shawn Michaels. He was the referee and he added a lot to the match and the feud.

Speaking of the feud that was great too. In 2011 they didn't really have that much of a feud between each other but in 2012 it was wonderful. They had The Undertaker wanting Triple H to give him another match and the reason that he did was because The Undertaker said that Shawn was better than him. So there was some tension between Shawn and Hunter but on the other hand Undertaker was the one that ended HBK's career. So it was definitely unpredictable and it turned out to be a five star match.

PPV of the year: Wrestlemania 28

This PPV was hands the best. We three great matches on it Rock/Cena, Jericho/Punk, and HHH/Taker. I don't buy PPVs very often but I'm glad that I bought this one.

Wrestler the year: Bobby Roode and Daniel Bryon

I couldn't really pick between Roode and Daniel Bryon because they both had great years Daniel Bryon showed us a heel character that most people didn't know he could pull off. He has tons of charisma and is one of the highlights of the wwe now.

Bobby Roode also had a great year, he was the Tna world champion half of the year and has been putting on great feuds and matches the entire year. Now Bobby is on top of Tna which in my opinion is right where he belongs. Roode is my favorite current wrestler and he has probably the best character in Tna right now. I would even say that he is the face of Tna right now along with Jeff Hardy.

Show the year: Impact Wrestling

After Extreme Rules Raw and smackdown have been horrible. I call it the drought of 2012. Raw has gotten a little bit better after Raw 1000 but it's still not that good. Tna however has been really good all most all of the year especially once it went live.

Episode of the year: Raw 1000

This episode was amazing. It felt like Wrestlemania. It had tons of old superstars come back and it was just all around great. I guess wwe knew that they had to do something to pull themselves out of the drought of the summer.

Stupidest moment of the year: Hulk Hogan's reaction to Devon at Bound for Glory

Stupidest story line: The Clair Lench thing

This was a really terrible story line and lots of it didn't even make sence. The only reason this story line ended was because Clair Lench quit Tna and thank goodness she did because if not it still could be going on right now. Unfortunately it looks like Tna is starting another story line that may be even worse which is the Brooke Hogan and Bully Ray story line eh do I have to even to talk about that or is it obvious how bad that is.

Non Wrestling awards

Movie of the year: The Avengers

This was a really great movie I went to the theaters twice to see it. If you haven't seen it you should definitely check it out.

Well I hope you all have a great year. Be sure to tell what you think about these awards on twitter @Enc98 or on Facebook: Enc Wwe. Also check out my brand new youtube channel  ENC98TV. I'll have lot's more articles coming in 2013 so stay tuned to Pro Wrestling Review.

Pro Wrestling Review #5: More Wrestlemainia Possibilities

Welcome back to Pro Wrestling Review. In my last article I talked about the the possibilities of Stone Cold vs CM Punk, The Rock vs Cm Punk, and John Cena vs The Rock. Today we're going to be talking about some more Wrestlemania possibilities so let's get started.

Topic #1 The Undertaker at Wrestlemania

Every year there is the big question of who The Undertaker will face at Wrestlemania with his streak on the line. Now it's pretty definite that The Undertaker won't face Triple H again so that raises the question of who will he face.Well I have someone in mind for the job....Wade Barrett. Barrett has been one of the most promising young superstars ever since he led the Nexus back in 2010. Then last year it looked like wwe was going to give Barrett a huge push but he got injured in February. Now that he has returned it looks like wwe wants to resume his push and what better way to do that than having him face The Undertaker at Wrestlemania. Now I'm not expecting Wade to win and I'll get into that later on but it could solidify him as a main evener.

I think the match could be very good also but probably not as good as some of Undertaker's recent Wrestlemania matches with Shawn Michaels and Triple H which were some of the best matches of all time. Although if Barrett could put on a match of that caliber I think it would really help his career. I'm guessing that a hardcore or last man standing match would work well.

Topic #:2 Should The Undertaker's streak ever be ended?

This is a topic that is greatly debated with wrestling fans. Now I can see both sides to this argument but I am of the opinion that it shouldn't ever be ended. I'm a big Undertaker fan in fact he's my second favorite of all time and I don't think that it should ever be ended. This is probably the thing that will define the Undertaker's career the most maybe even more than his seven world championship reigns. I think that he should have a complete streak for his entire career.

Although the streak may not mean as much once he's gone than it does now. If someone is to end it then I'd want it to be a young and up and coming superstar not someone that's going to retire soon anyway. If it's going to benefit anyone's hall of fame career it should be the Undertaker's. I did gain more respect for Triple H because of the fact that he didn't end this year.

Right now there's just not enough certainty that a superstar will stay in the main event. Let's look at Jack Swagger of The Miz one year at Wrestlemania they are world champions and the next year basically jobbers. Wwe just doesn't know how to push young talent right (Which I'll have another article about later). For someone to beat the Streak it would need to be a perfect scenario. It would need to be someone that has lots of talent and someone that wwe wants as a the face of the company. There's been many people that have seemed to match that description and their carrier's have gone nowhere. Wade Barrett would be a good person to do it but before we even think about someone ending the streak we need to see a susesful push to the main event which if you think about it we haven't really seen in a long time.

I don't think it should be ended and if it were it would have to be a young superstar and a perfect scenario In the end though it will probably be up to The Undertaker, there were rumors that he wanted Randy Orton and Kurt Angle to end it. Although that was of couple years ago before the streak was as important as it is now.

I guess we'll just have to see what happens I don't think that this will be The Undertaker's last Wrestlemania so we have a couple of years to see what they will do. Be sure to tell me what you think.

Topic #:3 Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania

I think that there is a possibility that Chris Jericho will return for Wrestlemania 29. It's definitely not as big of a possibility as it was last year but it's still possible. It would be great to have Jericho back and if he returns then maybe we could have another feud with CM Punk vs Chris Jericho. Now even though he left as a face I want Jericho to return as a heel. I like Y2J and all that but I think Jericho is at his best when he's a heel. CM Punk I also believe is best when he's a heel. So a feud with both of them in their best characters could be very promising. Now even if Jericho is a face in the feud it would still be good to see.

There's a good chance that we won't see Chris at this year's Wrestlemania but if wwe does have Cena vs The Rock again they'll need something to with Punk. We'll just have wait and see but tell me on twitter if you think Jericho will return.

Another match that Chris Jericho could have at Wrestlemania is with the Undertaker. This is a match that I've wanted to happen for a while. I don't think that Jericho and The Undertaker have ever had much of a feud. I think that they could have a great feud and a great match. Jericho would probably be heel and Undertaker face.

This match doesn't have be at this Wrestlemania  Maybe at Wrestlemania 30. I think this would be great to see and I hope that it happens eventually.

Pro Wrestling Review #4: Wrestlemania possibilities

Welcome back to Pro Wrestling Review. Today I'm going to be talking about a couple different possible things that could happen at Wrestlemania

Topic #1 The Rock at Wrestlemania

Last year at Wrestlemania when Rock won I couldn't believe it. I had fully expected John Cena to win. I thought John Cena would get his representation as one of the greats in wwe like The Rock had gotten ten years earlier in 2002. Lot's of people obviously don't like Cena (I'm not that much of a fan of him myself) but he has been the face of wwe for about 7 years. Instead of Darren Young I would say that John Cena is "Mr No Days Off".

If I remember right The Rock had just kicked out of the attitude adjustment so when Rock hit Cena with the rock bottom I expected Cena to kick out. So the ref's hand went down for 1...2...and I thought to myself why isn't Cena kicking out ...3. I was so surprised I was just sitting there staring at my TV in disbelieve. I'm a fan of The Rock and I've bought lots of his merchandise since he's come back but I never expected him to actually win at wrestlemania. Now it looks like John Cena can't beat The Rock and he's not good enough to be in that top tier of guys in the industry. The one match that I actually wanted Cena to win he didn't.

Then after all that I realized that wwe did that on purpose. If you remember in the match The Rock kicked out of the AA and then John Cena started trying to do the people's elbow but got rock bottomed. I distinctly remember the announcers talking about how Cena trying to taunt The Rock with the people's elbow might have cost him the match. Wwe made the ending out of nowhere for a reason. They're going to have a rematch. John Cena had a look of disbelief on his face. Notice how they didn't have The Rock straight up of win the match, no the ending just came out of nowhere. This isn't how they would end a feud that's this big. I'm guessing they'll do something like with Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Cena will want a rematch believing that he really can beat Rock and that he just made a mistake in the match. Now I don't think that Cena will be forced to retire like in HBK and The Undertaker feud, there's no way wwe would go for that.

Wwe wants to get as much out The Rock as they can. One Dwayne's become kind of a big actor in Hollywood and I'm sure wwe likes him using Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson again  But more importantly wwe wants to get as many matches out of The Rock as they can. They know that he's a huge draw so they want to make this feud between him and Cena go on as long as they can. Now this match does kind of seem like it should only happen once or once in a lifetime I guess. Although the second part of this feud I think could be very good. It would have more story line than the first part probably and I think this match will happen at Wrestlemania next year. So what twice in a lifetime.

Another way wwe could with The Rock is to have him face CM Punk. Recently I was talking to some people on twitter about the prospect of CM Punk vs The Rock at wrestlemania and I really think this could be a great feud. CM Punk has been taking jabs at The Rock ever since this summer when Punk hit The Rock with the GTS and turned heel. He used The Rock's finisher in his match with Cena at Night of Champions. Then He's also been talking about The Rock in some of his promos lately.

This leads me to think that wwe might be trying to set up this match. Now it could happen at Wrestlemania but I really think that they are gonna go with Rock and Cena. This is definitely another match that needs to happen. Wwe could do it at a later wrestlemania but Punk's current character I think would be the best combat The Rock. We don't know what Punk will be in over a year. I hope that wwe keeps his current character because I think that it works the best out of all the characters he's had in the wwe. Whenever they do it though this match has to happen at some point. I think these two could have a great feud and a great match

Another thing that has been rumored about is a triple threat between The Rock, Cena, and CM Punk. I think this feud would be very interesting with the three of them but I don't think that it would draw as much as a one on one match. Although it would be a good match for Summerslam.

Topic #2: Stone Cold vs CM Punk

Another person that CM Punk has been taking jabs at is Stone Cold Steve Austin. This match has rumored about for very long time. It's always not happened primarily because Austin isn't really in the shape to do it. He's had lot's of knee problems and that was one the reasons that he retired from wwe in the first place. Lately Punk has been taking jabs at Austin in his promos and Stone Cold said in an interview for WWE 13 that he would beat Punk if they ever had a match. Then speaking of WWE 13 the main cover was of CM Punk and the legend cover was of Stone Cold. Wwe is definitely teasing this match I just wonder if this is just wwe teasing it and hoping something will come of it someday or if they'er are actually preparing for it to happen. They could do it at this wrestlemania Austin had knee surgery this summer but he should be recovered by wrestlemania. The more likely thing that will happen is that it will take place at wrestlemania 30. I'm sure that this will be a huge event seeing that it's the 30th anniversary. The legendary Stone Cold/ Punk match would be a great way to make it memorable. Just like Punk vs The Rock this is a match that has to happen sometime.

So tell me on twitter when/if you think these matches will happen.

Also be sure to vote for the match of the year on twitter. Just tell me on twitter (@ENC98) using #matchoftheyear which you voted for. The choices are Taker/HHH WM28, Jericho/Punk WM28, Jericho/Punk Extreme Rules, Bryon/Punk Over the limit, Cena/Punk Night of champions , or Roode/Ares Destination X. Sometime in late December once people have voted I will do a Pro Wrestling Review article on it and give what I voted for and which match won overall. I will also give some other awards.

Thanks reading be sure to follow me on twitter @ENC98 (twitter.com/Enc98) and give me your thoughts on this article. Also give me ideas for other articles. Remember to stay tuned to for more Pro Wrestling Review.
